Important Update Regarding IV Therapy in Maine
New state regulations are changing how IV therapy clinics can operate across Maine.
At IV HydraLounge, our mission has always been simple: provide safe, medically supervised IV therapy that's accessible when our community needs it most.
Recently adopted regulations in Maine will drastically change how outpatient IV therapy clinics are allowed to operate. While we fully support regulations that prioritize patient safety, these new requirements are some of the most restrictive in the country and go far beyond established healthcare practices used safely every day in hospitals, physician offices, and infusion centers.
Under the new rules, physicians—not Registered Nurses—must personally prepare IV infusions before they can be administered. As a result, clinics like ours will no longer be able to offer same-day or walk-in IV treatments. Instead, IV appointments must be scheduled in advance so infusions can be prepared beforehand.
For our patients, this means:
No more walk-in IV therapy
Reduced appointment flexibility
Delays in receiving treatment
Less access for those needing timely hydration or wellness support
For healthcare providers across Maine, these regulations could lead to:
Reduced access to preventative wellness services
Increased healthcare costs
Fewer healthcare options in rural communities
Challenges for locally owned healthcare practices
Reduced patient choice
Our Registered Nurses are highly trained, licensed healthcare professionals who have safely prepared and administered IV therapies under provider oversight for years. This long-standing model is widely accepted throughout healthcare and has an excellent safety record.
We are asking Maine leaders to reconsider two specific provisions of these regulations:
Allow Registered Nurses to prepare IV infusions under advanced practice provider standing orders.
Remove the requirement that physicians personally prepare IV infusions.
These changes would continue to prioritize patient safety while preserving access to the care thousands of Mainers rely on.
